19-year-old Pinoy student creates ‘SOS’ website to help others fight depression during ECQ

The beginning of year 2020 saw the eruption of Taal Volcano displacing hundreds from their homes, and currently with the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipinos here and abroad are staying at home under a state-declared quarantine.

The ongoing pandemic also resulted in an economic downturn, leaving people in a state of worry and confusion. This situation prompted a 19-year-old accounting student from the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio to do something – a vaccine-like solution to keep his friends in good mental well-being amid the pandemic.

Born from a family of educators and whose parents serve in an upland public school in Nueva Vizcaya, Abuel Bayangan believes that the world need more online contents that are inspirational, educational and downloadable for those who don’t always have internet connection.

We have an online world that full of trash that’s toxic‘, the young founder exclaimed during an interview conducted by Pacific Standard. ‘We need better contents that can heal broken spirits. Music has that power. And yes, Filipinos love to sing because even though we don’t have that much money, we have golden voices which we can use to help heal the world… make it a better place’.

That’s why he started a website called SOS Lyrics : www.soslyrics.com SOS is a directory of lyrics, lyric videos and other inspirational contents. The lyrics can be downloaded in PowerPoint format so that it can be displayed in the classroom or church services during congregational worship.

He conceptualized the website to be a toolbox for ‘good vibes and happiness’ with the aim of actually spreading a ‘virus of inspiration’ initially target to the lonely boy and girl out there. Hence the name SOS.

‘SOS is not just about songs or lyrics. You can get that anywhere online or in Youtube. What makes SOS different is that we only have a select content. Dapat it should be educational and inspirational, which means it’s good everyone in the family. These days, there’s too much fake news and negativity around. At SOS, we will make sure po na lahat ng contents namin ay masaya na, educational pa. Hindi dapat masasayang oras ng tao.‘, says the young founder.

According to the young founder, SOS Lyrics is similar having a song book or a mobile karaoke. Users can easily find lyrics of the best hits of the day. More than that, parents and teachers can download a PowerPoint format of the lyrics.

Upon checking the website, most featured contents are spiritual. ‘That’s the need of the hour po kasi. We are looking into expanding our selection for diverse genres and we will constantly improve it. At the moment, we are doing this mainly for our schools, home schools, and churches na naghahanap ng downloadable lyrics for na naka-powerpoint na para sa kanilang Sunday services.’

In the future, the young founder is considering to allow users to upload their own contents so that Filipinos can inspire foreigners with our dances, covers and any type of content that’s inspirational and fun. ‘Diyan kasi magaling ang Pinoy. Sa pagpapasaya ng iba. Kahit malungkot ang Pinoy, kaya parin niyang magpatawa’, says the young founder. #
