Amalia Fuentes, a veteran actress and one of the Philippines most beloved icons has passed away. She was 79.
Her relatives confirmed her passing on Saturday. Fuentes was brought to the hospital several days ago and succumbed to multiple organ failure, according to her nephew Niño Mulach in an interview with DZMM.
“Dinala po siya sa [St. Luke’s Medical Center] nung three [or] four days ago. Tapos nagkaroon na siya ng multiple organ failure, tapos lagi siyang nagse-seizure,” Muhlach told DZMM in describing Fuentes’ final days.
[She was brought to St. Luke’s Medical Center either three or four days ago, then she had multiple organ failure and she always had seizures.]
He also added that Fuentes has been “paralyzed” and “bedridden for the past 4 years” following a heart attack.
The former child star also added that Fuentes died at 4:00 in the morning. He and their family were on the veteran actress’ side when she was taking her last breaths.
Back in 2015, Fuentes suffered a stroke while on a trip in South Korea. Since then, she has kept a low profile in showbiz events.
Her grandchildren, Alfonso and Alyanna Martinez, also confirmed the news, saying that the actress has “taken her last breath.”
“She is now reunited with her husband Joey Stevens, our mother Anna-Lissa Martinez and her ex-husband, our Lolo Bobby,” they wrote in their social media accounts.
“We have prayed for nothing but peace for her and now she can finally rest. Our family only asks that you respect our privacy during this time and join us in praying for her soul,” the siblings added.
Aga Mulach, her nephew, also posted on his Instagram, saying that he’s “a losss for words.”
“You started it all for us. You have taught me so much in life. You were an inspiration. You treated me like your son,” Muhlach said in an Instagram post Saturday.
“You are with our creator now. Rest in HIS embrace. My dad, my mom, you (my 2nd mom, ate liezl who’s always been a sister to me). I miss you all. I will miss you all forever,” he added.
Fuentes is one of the pillars of Philippine show business and was considered among the country’s most beautiful actresses during their era. She has earned the title “Elizabeth Taylor of the Philippines because of her resemblance to the Hollywood actress.
She achieved leading lady status with her starring roles in various films for Sapaguita Pictures during the late 50’s to 60’s. Fuentes won the Famas best actress award for her role in “Ibulong mo sa Hangin” in 1967, and the 1973 Manila Film Festival best actress award for “Pag-Ibig Mo Buhay Ko!”
Her love team with actor Romeo “Bobby” Vasquez helped propel her career, and her personal life. They were married from 1965 to 1969. Their union bore a daughter, Anna Liza or Liezl, who later married Actor Albert Martinez.
Liezl passed away in 2015 from breast cancer at age 47. Vasquez died two years later after his daughter.
Fuentes’ second marriage was to American businessman Joey Stevens. However, the union did not last as the two later separated. The couple adopted a son during their time together. Stevens died in 2012.
Fuentes is also known as the aunt of actors Aga Mulach and Nino Mulach.
Details about funeral arrangements have not yet been released to the public. However, her family assures to announce it once they have finalized it.
