Angelina Jolie gets candid with Boy Abunda about love and loss

  • Maleficent star Angelina Jolie got candid with Boy Abunda about love and loss in an interview promoting her newest film “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”
  • Abunda asked hard-hitting questions about love, which is a heavy theme in the new movie
  • Jolie answered candidly and with grace, getting up close and personal with the Kapamilya host

Hollywood A-lister Angeline Jolie got a little emotional before answering Filipino TV host Boy Abunda’s questions about love and loss.

In a recent interview for Abunda’s talk show “Tonight With Boy Abunda,” the question about love and loss seemed to have struck a chord with the “Maleficent star,” also a strong theme in the now showing sequel of the Disney film, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.”

The Kapamilya host flew to Japan where the Oscar-winning actress and her co-star Sam Riley were promoting their newest film that sees Jolie reprising her iconic role as Maleficent, Princess Aurora’s stepmother, who is seen to struggle balancing the fine line between the goodness that she seeks to achieve and the inherent darkness of her nature throughout her journey of motherhood.

While the two stars only had a few minutes with the Pinoy host, he definitely made sure he had made it a juicy one.

“Why does love always come with pain?” Boy asked, to which the star replied that love comes with pain because it stretches the heart.

“I think when love is right, it’s a good kind of pain. It’s growing. It’s a pain where your heart is stretching, your feelings are stretching. The greater the love, the greater the loss,” she explained. “The greater the love, the greater the loss, is true.”

And definitely, Boy Abunda isn’t known for shying away from intense questions. So when he posed this question, it wasn’t a surprise that the “Tomb Raider” actress was a little shocked when he asked her: “Love doesn’t always end well. Why, Ms. Jolie?”

The Maleficent actress laugh and had to “just take a minute” for that question. Eventually, she responded by saying that sometimes this happens because of a misunderstanding of the kind of love that a person has.

This could allude to her recent marriage with fellow Hollywood actor Brad Pitt that ended in a divorce. Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt after an alleged altercation involving him and their 18-year-old son, Maddox Jolie Pitt. According to reports, they’re still in the process of figuring out how to divide everything, including the French winery and castle, which was where they got married in 2014.

In a separate interview with People, Jolie, who has her children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Kox and Vivienne, admitted that she had to gather some strength to reprise her role as the iconic ‘Mistress of Evil’ because she was feeling “pretty broken.”

“It was a tough time. I’d been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. In fact, I was feeling pretty broken. It took me a moment to feel the strength of (Maleficent) again.”

Netizens responded positively to the interview, some commending Abunda’s interviewing skills and for having “simple to ask but hard to answer” questions; while some noted that although Filipino celebrities are used to being asked more in-depth and personal questions when they talk about the movies that they’re promoting, they aren’t surprised when Jolie was taken aback with the interview’s direction, saying that it’s not how Hollywood usually do it.

A lot more is in store for the a-list actress, as she is reportedly training for her next film “Eternals.” It’s one of Marvel’s upcoming films that is about a race of immortal aliens created to and set to Earth to battle the Deviants. Jolie is set to star alongside Salma Hayek, and “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington. -Cosmo/Philstar
